Do I really need a website?


This is a very common question that small business owners ask themselves.

The fact is potential customers are changing the methods they use to find information about a store, restaurant or business in their local area. Up until a few years ago the majority of people would use a phone directory like the yellow pages or they would scan through newspapers trying to find a phone number or a bit of information. Once they find something, the information could be out of date or not include the information they really want.

Now your customers are using the internet to find information. They can go to a search engine, type in your business name, or even a generic search term like ‘golf courses in Gurnee IL’ and the information they need pops up in seconds.
They can then go into your website and not only find your phone number, but also a whole bunch of information. It could include an interactive map to your business, pictures of your products, a listing of your upcoming events, a coupon for 10% off, and so on all in a full color interactive format!

  
 


A few facts about internet usage:


65% of the rural population and 85% of the population in metropolitan areas use computers at least once a week. This percentage has never gone down, and it is likely that it will continue to increase.
Ten years ago less than 50% of the population used the internet.  Five years ago, primary users were people who worked in offices in jobs that were above the median income level.  Three years ago the fastest growing demographic for internet use was minor children.  Today it is retirees. The fact is the internet is the most commonly used tool by the average person for finding information

So do you need a website? – That is for you to decide if you think it will benefit your business plan but remember that if you are selling a product or service, you could find yourself left behind your competition if you’re not advertising where customers are looking for information.
